Smith Nature Symposium: Our Future Speaks

August 13, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join us for the first session in Brushwood Center’s live-streamed 37th annual Smith Nature Symposium series.
The Smith Nature Symposium opens with the most important voices in this series: our future. Young leaders from Cool Learning Experience (CLE), a distinguished environmental education program and partner with Brushwood Center, share their vision for a more just and sustainable future using art and poetry. CLE is based in Waukegan, IL and nurtures children’s well-being through innovative learning programs that foster healthy relationships between families, the community, and the natural world. These talented nature buddies collaborated both virtually and live to create structural art and spoken word that reflects their life experiences. Their collective presentation, titled Black, Brown, and Green, explores their visions and actions for a more just and sustainable future.
Ticket prices are very affordable and designed to be “GIVE WHAT YOU CAN” ranging from $0 to $100 at the discretion of the participant. All presentations will be available in English and Spanish.
ABOUT THE SMITH NATURE SYMPOSIUM:
Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods hosts the 37th annual Smith Nature Symposium in memory of the significant civic legacy of Hermon Dunlap and Ellen Thorne Smith, who donated their land and cabin to help form Ryerson Woods. Hermon, or Dutch, was chair and CEO of Marsh & McLennan, and led The Chicago Community Trust, Newberry Library, and many other Chicago Institutions. Ellen was a philanthropic leader and champion of nature with organizations such as The Field Museum and Chicago Zoological Society. She authored the book Chicagoland Birds: When and Where to Find Them. Proceeds from the Smith Nature Symposium support Thrive Together, Brushwood Center’s COVID-19 response for a more just and sustainable future.
