Go Green Winnetka Fall Native Plant Sale

September 9, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)

With autumn coming up, many homeowners are thinking of putting aside their garden tools for the season. Common practice is to purchase plants in the springtime and appreciate them throughout the summer. But what if planting in the fall yielded better results for a perennial to survive and thrive? When it comes to landscape plantings, many horticulturalists advise planting in September, rather than earlier in the year. Fall affords warm soil but cooler temperatures, and plenty of sunlight and predictable rainfall to help new plants get established. Roots continue growing until the ground freezes.

So don’t put those trowels away quite yet, because Go Green Winnetka is gearing up for its third Fall Native Plant Sale. The local nonprofit will sell over 50 varieties of plants that are essential to the health and well-being of our environment. Native plants are the ultimate perennial. From the milkweed that is vital to the Monarch butterfly’s life cycle to the pollinator-friendly purple coneflowers that provide color virtually all summer long, they’re beautiful and beneficial at the same time. They provide habitat for the insects, birds, and pollinators that are integral to our ecosystem, are an effective tool in stormwater management and maintaining water quality—and they thrive in our Midwest climate with little encouragement.

The Go Green Winnetka Fall Native Plant Sale takes place on September 9 from 9–11 am in Indian Hill Park at 131 Wilson Street in Winnetka. Seasoned native plant gardeners will be on hand to help you make the right choices for your needs. There will also be information on the website beforehand to help you plan. More information can be found at gogreenwinnetka.org.
