Given the urgency of climate action and the considerable new resources available for transportation infrastructure, it is imperative that our regional leaders address the climate emergency in their planning. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, our local planning agency, has proposed adding nearly 300 miles of lanes to our region’s expressways and arterial streets, leading to a substantial increase in driving, millions of tons of additional CO2 emissions, and decreased safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. CMAP leaders need to hear us loud and clear: Chicagoland needs to halt dangerous and polluting roadway expansion plans. Instead, we need to fix the infrastructure we have and need to fund more transit, biking, and pedestrian projects that lower greenhouse gas emissions and provide safer travel options for everyone.
